Innovative storage and control
The updates to the California’s interior have been designed to take everything about its predecessor to the next level. The larger platform, taken from the modern Multivan long wheel base, allows for increased interior space and practicality. Volkswagen has incorporated a three-zone concept which maximises outdoor living and interior comfort. Zone one is the main living area which is situated behind the rotatable front seats creating a spacious family dining area, perfect for meal times together. Zones two and three are classed as ‘terraces’, which have been created by the sliding doors on both sides and the kitchenette and can be accessed either inside or outside the camper. While sleeping, you can benefit from a blackout system throughout; integrated roller blinds on the sliding doors and boot lid, magnetic shades for the front side windows and integrated windscreen shade. The Ocean and Coast features an improved kitchen which has better space efficiency and is finished in a Platinum Sandwich/Raven Brushed trim. A small door has been put inside the load compartment to allow for accessing the gas cylinder. The Beach Camper has a slide out kitchen module which sits in the rear load area and features additional storage, a single ring gas burner, a cutlery drawer and a 230v power socket which covers all your cooking needs While cooking you will be sheltered from the elements by the open tailgate.
California Beach Camper
The Beach Camper five seater is equipped with three seats at the rear. The two outer rear seats can be folded back completely which creates two additional sleeping spaces in the living area. It features a compact mini-kitchen extending from the rear and an external 230-volt shore power connection. Perfectly practical for families on the move.
California Coast
A four seater, which features a redesigned kitchenette on the passenger’s side with a sink, a cool box, cabinets and a single-ring gas cooler. The all-in compact design allows access to the left sliding door. A fold out bed is featured which measures out at 1,980 × 1,060 mm.
California Ocean
Offers all the features of the coast as well as exclusive sustainable seat fabric with embroidered details, heated seats, a large roof storage box, an auxiliary air heater and ambient lighting. This campervan is ideal for those who prefer some advanced technological features for their long journeys.
Performance
The Volkswagen California is powered by a range of impressive engine options, giving you plenty of power for your journey. With the choice of a turbocharged petrol engine (TSI) , the all new plug-in hybrid drive (eHybrid) and a turbo diesel engine (TDI) these can be combined with any trim level and are coupled with an automatic direct shift gearbox. For the first time, Volkswagen has provided the option of a plug-in hybrid drive system which has an output of 180 kW or 245 PS. This eHybrid setup has been combined with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, allowing the California to perform in a variety of road conditions and temporarily transform into an electric vehicle - perfect for those who want to improve their fuel efficiency and decrease their fuel emissions.
Technology
Volkswagen has included a new 10-inch colour touch display and a digital cockpit that features intelligent assistance systems to help keep you and your family safe on your journey. All functions can now be controlled by the main infotainment display at the front of the vehicle which comes as a 5-inch control unit. All features that are camping-relevant are on the screen, which includes interior lighting functions, cool box controls, fresh and waste water levels and an auxiliary heater. With just a double tap, you can turn off all LED background lighting and these functions can also now be controlled via a smartphone using the California app so you can stay as cosy as you like both when driving and when resting!
Exterior
The exterior retains the classic two-tone colour options which have become iconic within Volkswagen’s camper range. There is 11 single-tone finishes as well as an addition 3 colour combinations:
- Mono Silver and Energetic Orange Metallic
- Deep Black Pearl and Fontana Red Metallic
- Candy white Solid and Starlight Blue Metallic
The pop-up roof is available in 3 colours; Basalt Grey, Toffee Brown and Glacier White. You can choose between a selection of alloy wheels available from 16”, 17” and 18” with the largest being a 19” design. All models now feature two sliding doors as standard allowing for easy access and a pop-up roof with a large opening and window at the front. Two additional side windows which come with mosquito nets fitted, so no matter where you stop off for the night, you’ll be safe from nature as well!
