If you want a big space, where your kids can spread out and you can change things around to suit your needs, then a used VW Caddy Maxi Life is well worth looking at.
The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi and Caddy Maxi Life are a little bit special in the van world. Along with its big brother, the Transporter, the VW Caddy Maxi has brought car-like levels of drivability and safety to the small van market; whilst bringing flexibility and practicality to the MPV market.
A used Caddy Maxi is a little wizard, perfect for multi-drop use, but also with plenty of room if you’re a domestic plumber, bricklayer or even have a dog-walking business. The Caddy Maxi van has a smart and reasonably sophisticated interior, giving you a car-like driving experience, as well as plenty of car-like features, dependent on the trim level and age of the Caddy that you choose.
Most models have an infotainment system with colour screen along with Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio; great for longer journey’s and for making work feel less like a chore. The Volkswagen hallmarks of great build quality and well thought out practicality are on display; not only is there plenty of load-space, but there’s somewhere for your drinks, lunch, paperwork and day to day ‘stuff’.
The VW Caddy Maxi Life is an excellent MPV available with 5 or 7 seats and offers family flexibility. It may not have cutting-edge design on the outside, but the inside is supremely practical and offers plenty of space in the cabin.
Caddy Maxi Life
The Caddy Maxi Life’s smart front-end features a chrome-finished radiator grille. Colour-keyed bumpers, door handles and (electrically heated and adjustable) door mirrors stylishly co-ordinate with the body. Black roof rails look smart and provide additional load-bearing options, while extra lustre is afforded by 16-inch alloy wheels. Sliding near and off-side rear doors provide simple access to the vehicle’s second and third rows. Lighting includes range-controllable headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lamps.
Eight-way adjustable front seats offer lumbar support, and the driver can get to grips with a leather steering wheel, gear knob and gaiter, the former offering reach-and-rake adjustability. Other features include power-assisted steering, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, power-operated front windows and heated front and rear windscreens, the latter with wash-and-wipe functionality. An illuminated and lockable glovebox, under-floor compartments and drink holders are included too. Removable second and third rows help to provide the vehicle with as much as 3,800 litres of storage space.
A range of petrol and diesel engines are available for the Caddy Maxi Life. A 2.0-litre diesel unit is the highest-performing, producing 148bhp, 340Nm of torque, 0-60mph in approximately 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 136mph. Another 2.0-litre diesel engine is the most fuel-efficient, returning 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 124g/km. The Start/Stop system cuts the engine when it isn’t needed, helping to reduce fuel consumption further.
A six-speaker sound system includes an AM/FM and DAB digital radio. Bluetooth ®, AUX and SD connectivity is also featured. Standard driver aids include an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronic Stability Programme, Traction Control, Hill Hold Assist and automatic hazard warning lights. Passive safety features comprise ISOFIX mountings, child-proof locks, electric seatbelt tensioners, seatbelt reminders and multiple airbags. Remote central locking, deadlocks, an alarm and an immobiliser help to keep the vehicle secure.
In terms of the engines the Caddy deals with, you’ll have two turbodiesel options. The first is a 1.6-liter TDI and the second is a 2.0 TDI. The former has outputs of 75PS and 102PS – the lower output possesses 225Nm of torque, and the higher has around 250Nm.
When it comes to the 2.0 TDI, you’ll expect 110PS and 140PS. The 110PS version possesses 280Nm of torque, but the 140PS gets up to 320Nm. It’s obviously a lot more popular due to the demand and work necessary. The 140PS will get through a lot of effort with its 1.5-tonne towing capacity.
With both engines, the transmission options are both automatic and manual. In terms of the manual transmissions, the 1.6 TDI comes with a five-speed – the 2.0 TDI has an extra gear, though, as one would expect.
