Peugeot’s 2008, 3008 and 5008 SUVs are now significant sellers for the French firm, but in the process it’s remaining dedicated to its more traditional body styles – not least the estate car.
It’s why the popular 308 SW is back for a new generation, bringing with it a range of advancements to make sure it can stand out next to competitors like the Ford Focus Estate and Volkswagen Golf Estate. Let’s see if it’s worth a look…
What’s new?
Following on from the recently introduced 308 hatchback, this SW model contributes greater practicality, while bringing with it the same stylish, modern design that’s headed up by bold LED lights and a large frameless grille.
Inside, the new 308 SW gets a raft of new interior technology – not least a new touchscreen – and also the addition of plug-in hybrids for the first time, which are quite a rarity in the mid-size estate car segment.
What’s under the bonnet?
The pair of new plug-in hybrid powertrains focus around a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired to an electric motor, with power outputs of 178bhp or 222bhp. Peugeot also claims an electric range of around 37 miles.
More conventional engines are available as well though – a 128bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine or 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel for those that want that long-distance fuel economy. All engines in the 308 range now come paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission too.
What’s it like to drive?
The hybrid is a great choice in the 308 SW, bringing electric running around town but still having the petrol engine available if you’re wanting to go further afield. It’s an efficient and refined setup too, carefully maximising the best power source for the specific situation.
With a comfortable ride, the 308 SW is a great place to spend time behind the wheel, while still feeling involving to drive if you get on a more enjoyable piece of road. The only thing to mention is that Peugeot’s unique driving position – using a tiny steering wheel and high-up positioned dials – doesn’t suit everyone.

Peugeot’s interiors have just been getting better and better in recent years, and the latest 308’s cabin is one of its best yet. The biggest change is the new touchscreen, which feels like a big step forward and is super slick to use. The large digital instrument cluster is fantastic too.
In terms of interior space, though the 308 SW’s rear seats aren’t the most accommodating, it’s hard to grumble at the 605-litre boot, increasing to 1,634 litres with the rear seats folded.
What’s the spec like?
Kicking off the 308 SW range is the Active Premium, which comes as standard with LED lights, a digital instrument cluster and 10-inch touchscreen. Allure versions add climate control, satellite navigation and 17-inch alloy wheels, with the Allure Premium trim bringing a wireless smartphone charging plate, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control.
Move up to the GT and it brings a heated steering wheel, Alcantara and leather seats, matrix LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels, while the flagship GT Premium model gains a Focal sound system, massaging and heated front seats and a 360-degree camera system.
Verdict
If you want a stylish, practical and well-equipped estate car, there’s plenty going for this latest Peugeot 308 SW.
With a good driving experience, comfortable ride and plenty of powertrain choices – particularly with the addition of the plug-in hybrids – the new 308 SW is certainly worth a look.
