1. BYD sold more EVs than Tesla at the end of 2023

It may be easy to assume that Tesla would be the electric car manufacturer that would sell the most EVs at any given point in time - but this isn’t true. In the final quarter of 2023, BYD sold a record 526,000 electric cars - Tesla struggled more at that time due to rising borrowing costs. If we look at 2023 as a whole, Tesla still sold more EVs than any other manufacturer - but this proves that BYD is on the rise to becoming a popular brand.

In 2022, BYD sold almost 1,860,000 electric cars globally, which makes them a clear market leader for electric vehicles. We are expected to see them grow exponentially over the next few years.

2. Most of their parts are made in-house

Whilst most companies buy parts from other manufactures, BYD are known to make most of their parts themselves. This means that they have been able to keep their costs low, which have allowed them to pass the lower cost onto the consumer. This makes their models a lot more affordable than their competitors. Other benefits of manufacturing parts in-house is that BYD can conduct their own quality control and develop advanced technologies. This means that you’ll be getting the best quality and highly innovative products not seen anywhere else.

3. Your mobile device could be powered by BYD

Before they became known as a prominent EV manufacturer, BYD were a major player in the electronics market and specialised in the creation of components for mobile and laptop devices - even now, 50% of Apple’s iPads are built with BYD components. They have since established themselves in other markets, such as electric motors, semiconductor chips, electronic control systems and power batteries. This innovation is what has allowed them to innovate and adapt components for bigger things.

4. BYD began its journey in 1995

Whilst the name may not be well-known just yet in the UK, BYD aren’t a brand new company - they have actually been around since 1995 and they entered the automotive industry in 2003. They were well-established in China, but hadn’t expanded their reach to other countries until now. Having diversified their portfolio and expanded operations into other areas, they have now been able to begin dominating the global market for electric cars.

One of their main goals today is to decrease the Earth’s temperature by 1 degree, by offering vehicle solutions and renewable energy solutions to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Their headquarters in Shenzhen has its own monorail systems because many of the staff live on-site and commute to work via monorail. Their goal is to create a more sustainable planet through their products and they have delivered over 74,000 ebuses around the world.

In January 2024, BYD’s very first electric cargo ship set sail for Europe, with the task of delivering 7,000 BYD cars. The mission was a success and another seven ships are being added to their fleet in the next two years.
